Marking
Sister October's website. It is my very best friend and I would trust it to cut me up into little ribbons without question. It does many interesting things in the field of marking.
Useful Tools
Maritime Information & Verification
MarineTraffic is a handy website for finding the locations of vessels. If you know the name or IMO number (or MMSI), you can find a vessel, so long as it's within coastal AIS range (they charge for satellite AIS, among other things). If you're trying to learn more about a vessel that you have an interest in, this is a good place to start.
Equasis keeps records on what company owns what vessel. It requires that you create an account to use it, however it's free. Keep in mind that records may not be incredibly up-to-date, and some companies don't have their entire fleets listed on there.
ShipSpotting.com is another one of those ones you need an account to make the most out of, however I think it's pretty worthwhile, especially if you're trying to find pictures to confirm that you're looking at the right ship.
The Global Fishing Watch Map is an invaluable resource for historical AIS data. Most AIS tracking sites like MarineTraffic and VesselFinder charge for AIS data past a certain time. This website is often a bit slow for me, as it's pretty resource-intensive.
