good morning Needles.

bending down, wrapped in your coat beneath thinning trees, you scrawl a chalk symbol on a local fire hydrant: the sign of roads & pathways, god of navigation. it's situated along the route you walk to the train. maybe it could speed things up a little for you on your way to work.

the sky is clear and the sun is cocked at a low winter angle. chunks of road salt explode against the pavement under the feet of the students passing through. the pulverized salt dots the sidewalk in innumerable white piles.

you pass a yellow box truck with official state plates, belonging to MassDOT. a picketed construction site where steadfast union men and women have been protesting since they broke ground. a pair of dormant green line trains, their heating systems purring in the cool air.

it's not freezing today. you can go without your gloves. the ladder of platforms at the train station grows closer. inside your pocket, you finger a sticker. "Reminder: Fare evasion is punishable by death." Candle gave this one to you. it belongs to her and to her group. It carries their symbols. the train below is about to depart. what's the best place for it?

bollard outside the gates, away from cameras
above the screen on a fare machine
above the door on the green line train
find a different place for it later
